We drive to Kenai Fjords for an excursion. We are going on a six hour boat tour to see Orcas, Puffins, Humpbacks, Sea Otters and glaciers. This is through Kenai Fjords Tours. We chose the Classic Kenai Fjords National Park Tour. The website has a webcam to enjoy!
Upon signing up, we each receive the waver to sign via email. It is aggressive and covers pretty much anything you can imagine. I kind of laugh at some of it. Even death. So we sign it. Of course.
The drive is beautiful. The waters in area are the turquoise of the tropical waters. It makes me miss the warmth of the tropics while blowing my mind that I’m in Alaska.
We line up towards the back of the group. As we board, the worker asks if either of us are gluten free or vegetarian. I’m cautiously optimistic.
We head to the top of the three-leveled boat. We have favor in that it isn’t raining. It’s cool out but it’s dry. People have claimed their spaces and we are out of luck. Unless we sit on the inside. We decide that people will move around and choose to not stress about it.
This ends up being a phenomenal trip. We do indeed see Orcas. This is all I needed to complete my list of Alaskan wishes. I’m a bit disappointed that it wasn’t a terrifying sight. The whales don’t seem very large given that we see them from a distance. Still, they’re beautiful creatures. I’m in awe of God’s creation.
There was one part of the Orca viewing we didn’t enjoy. The fact that this bay where they were was littered with plastic water bottles. Enough that it seems the company could take a half-day and a net to scoop them up. Numerous, empty water bottles. Sad to see. I don’t understand people that litter. Even though these bottle likely started out elsewhere. A human threw the bottles somewhere other than a trash can.
There are Sea Otters and Humpback Whales too. And Puffins. Not going to lie. The Puffins were lowkey disappointing. This is because the pamphlet shows a cute picture of a stuffed animal looking creature. Which they are when they are on land. Turns out they spend most of their time in the water. And that is how we view them. Looking more like birds, which they are. Not a cute little stuffed animal. lol. (My mind is vivid and usually paints a picture full of details and colors that rarely align with reality. I like this about myself even if it sets me up for disappointment occasionally.)
Lunch was a delightful chicken salad. Gluten free indeed. Each ingredient individually packaged for safety. I was so thankful to have a meal! I also enjoyed a Vodka lemonade. Alaska makes delicious cocktails.
We reach the glacier and are treated to a little breaching. The narrator tells of how this glacier is growing. The ridges in the ice, a vivid gorgeous hue of blue peaking out. Amazing.
It is time to head back.
We are head to the interior, which still has great views. I’d estimate about half of the people on the excursion are napping or are sea sick. Those who are feeling ill are resting and eating crackers. The crew has been very attentive on is. Checking that we feel ok. I took a preemptive Dramamine and recommend that as it was choppy on the way back.
As we head back to the dock, it begins to rain and is much cooler. We were blessed with great viewing weather during our journey and simply enjoy the ride inside.
Highly recommended this excursion. It is a beautiful six hours filled with Alaskan beauty on the waters. The boat is large enough for everyone to spread out and not feel crammed.
Just know that Puffins aren’t so cute on the water. Lol.
