Off the Rails in Alaska

Join me on a journey through my adventurous summer in Alaska – where work meets wilderness and every day is a wild ride!

Reunited

After having three days off, Sunday Derek and I both work a northbound train. Finally we are working the same car!

I’m relieved to be working together again. It’s been a rough couple weeks. My earnings are definitely affected by who the rail guide is. We work well as a team and it translates to tips!

We are dead until Talkeetna. I’m ok with this. You take the rest when you can.

While we are enroute to Talkeetna, I give a couple of friendship bracelets out. Soon almost every worker on the train has come to get a bracelet. This makes me happy as that’s what they’re for. People to enjoy!

I’ve made special red, white and blue ones for Memorial Day weekend. They prove to be popular.

The car in front of us has a group of six young Girl Scouts. The server takes six bracelets for them. The conductor happens to be there and he hands them out. I think that makes it even more special!

I realize I need to make larger sizes too as guys like to where them too. I quickly string one for Derek who now sports one occasionally!

At Talkeetna our passengers embark. I’ve taken the time to honor Memorial Day with the placement of some little flags up in the dome. It makes me laugh that the majority of our passengers are Australian.

It is a good day. I’m more relaxed when we work together. I know what to expect and I’m not worrying about what the rail guide is doing.

Tomorrow, Monday, we ride the motor coach back to Anchorage.
