Off the Rails in Alaska

Join me on a journey through my adventurous summer in Alaska – where work meets wilderness and every day is a wild ride!

Mouse vs Humans. Day Three. And More Training at the Rail Yard.

It’s Friday and I wake up about 30 minutes after Derek. I’m hoping the mouse is stuck the one of the mouse pad traps.

But no. It is not.

So I go about getting ready for a short day of training at the rail yard.

We arrive at 8am and go to our respective train cars. We run through a few times before going to listen to Denali Brewing Co teach a bit about their beers and distilled spirits. As well as have a tasting.

This year it is the owner speaking. As we taste different beers, he asks people to describe them. He then lets them pick some swag from a table in front of me. I have Celiac and cannot have beer. So when we get to taste the cider, I’m excited.

When he asks someone to describe the cider, I am ready! What comes out of my usually eloquent mouth is somewhat engaging. But I end it with the punctuation of a seven year old, “And that is all”.

Wow. Nice job Deb!

He does not tell me I can get any swag. But I am not about to be ripped off and I’m sitting right there. So I help myself to a glass.

Soon we are finished and leave early. Arriving home around 1:30pm. We quickly change and go for a walk along the Tony Knowles Trail by the waterfront.

It’s a gorgeous, sunny day. Far better than any day I remember from last summer.

The skies are clear and Mount Susitna, often referred to as the Sleeping Lady (because it looks like a reclining woman), is visible as is Mount Spurr (the volcano that threatens to erupt).

Enjoy the photos I took with my iPhone. Still working on my selfie skills!
