Off the Rails in Alaska

Join me on a journey through my adventurous summer in Alaska – where work meets wilderness and every day is a wild ride!

Termination Dust

It was only the middle of August. I still hadn’t been warm enough to wear shorts. And I only wore short sleeves briefly one day. Yet there it was. On the top of the mountain peaks on the way up to Denali.

Snow.

It looked as if God Himself had sprinkled powdered sugar on them. Dusting them ever so lightly.

In Alaska they call this “Termination Dust”. Because it’s a sign that the end of summer is near.

I love that name! How poetic and descriptive.

Originally, the term was used in the 1940s to indicate to construction workers that their seasonal work was ending. Now it simply means the end of summer.

Enjoy these beautiful pictures of the mountains and the Termination Dust!
