Off the Rails in Alaska

Join me on a journey through my adventurous summer in Alaska – where work meets wilderness and every day is a wild ride!

Days and Daze

The bus approached the tunnel. We’ve missed the window of opportunity for now and have to wait. When we proceed, I’m surprised to see we are driving on the railroad.

That’s the simplistic description of the tunnel. But it is true. Since it’s for both the railroad and automobiles, we are driving on the tracks. The tracks appear to be like the sunk-in-the-cement rails that are at road crossings. So it’s smooth.

We arrive home around 10pm. Sunday is a day of rest this week, and I sleep as long as I can.

We are working so many days now that time runs together. If you asked me what the date was, I likely couldn’t tell you. Same with the day of the week. But it’s a good thing because I’m having a great time!

Monday we head up to Healy. When we arrive, it’s around 6pm and we have time to explore a little. So we walk to the local grocery store.

The store is also an ACE Hardware, a liquor store, and almost anything you’d need if you lived far from civilization. I find a small, snack sized package of Funyuns for $7.59. I don’t know why Funyuns are going for this price. But I don’t buy any. I’m happy to see the canned Blueberry Mojito’s from Denali Brewing and buy a four pack to take home.

We walk back to the employee housing (it’s known as the Homestead), delighting in the warm weather. Neither of us wear a coat. It’s refreshing.

But we must rest because Tuesday is another work day.
