Off the Rails in Alaska

Join me on a journey through my adventurous summer in Alaska – where work meets wilderness and every day is a wild ride!

Downtown

Having a day off and trying to save on Uber/Lyfts, we took the city bus to downtown Anchorage. We would go to the mall, the mint and the trolley tour before getting a bite to eat.

We set off walking to the stop. If I had to guess, I’d say it was five miles away. But I’m not in shape and I don’t tend to enjoy a “good walk”. In reality it was only .7 mile.

The bus driver wasted no time, perhaps breaking speed limits, and soon we were downtown. We got off the bus and walked towards JC Penney, which was located in the mall.

Since it was cold, I was looking for a winter scarf. I was also hoping to find some new shirts. Tired of wearing the same two shirts on my days off. But I didn’t find anything I liked, as it was a strange mix of sparkles and graphic T’s. I did find a winter scarf, which made the rest of the day more comfortable for me.

We walked through the mall and then went to the Alaska Mint. Besides coins, the store also included some beautiful jewelry and ornaments.

Next up was the Trolley Tour. It was an enjoyable and informative tour lasting about an hour. Our driver/guide was born and raised in Alaska, his family roots run deep. Some of the sites we passed were Earthquake Park and Lake Hood. You can watch over 200 floatplane landings daily, at Lake Hood Restaurant and Bar.

Our last stop was Humpy’s Great Alaskan Alehouse. A recommendation from one of our Lyft drivers. It did not disappoint. I had the salmon for dinner. It was delicious and not overcooked, as can happen with salmon. For my beverage, I tried the Denali Spirits Canned Blueberry Mojito, which I am now hooked on. Be warned, it has a 13% ABV! It would be refreshing to sip over ice with a twist of lime on a summer’s day.

It was time to head home. I had CPR training the next morning!
